These days, more and more people are choosing to leave the corporate world and launch their own home businesses. But all too often in their zeal to get started, these eager entrepreneurs make unwise choices that ultimately doom their efforts from the start. In order to launch a viable home business, you need to take your time and make solid business decisions. Here are ten common traps to watch out for when starting your own home business.
1) No Automated Income
Many home businesses net only a small amount of profit per transaction and do not offer a steady automated income stream. If you are forced to manually sell a huge quantity of low-priced products just to turn small profits, you will never obtain wealth. If you’re selling low-priced goods, you need to find a way to automate the selling process or sell higher-ticket items instead.
2) Low Paying Job
Too many home businesses require too much labor for too little return. You don’t want to create a situation where you just end up creating a low-paying job for yourself. If there’s no end in the sight to the backbreaking work, and the long-term income potential just isn’t there, you might want to consider a different home business.
3) Unproven Business Strategy
If a business opportunity is brand new, it is also likely completed untested. If there isn’t an established market already for the products or services involved, then such a venture is simply too chancy. It’s better to follow in the footsteps of others who have successfully navigated the terrain ahead of you. Only get involved in home businesses that have a proven foundation of success.
4) Lack of Demand
There must be a viable market for the products or services you plan to offer, or your business is doomed from the start. If nobody wants what you’re selling, then why try to sell it? You must choose a product that’s in demand, as well as utilize a proven marketing strategy to target the right audience.
5) Empty Promises
Be wary of any pitch that promises the world for minimal effort. Any business scheme that claims will make you wealthy overnight is simply a hype factory that’s blowing a lot of smoke. A home business is just like any business and requires time and effort in order to build.
6) “Shady” Dealings
If it sounds too good to be true, then it most likely is. Never sign on with any home business deal that won’t specify the exact services or products that are being offered. If you want to be a reputable home business owner, also stay away from home biz opps that some may consider questionable such as pornography or gambling.
7) Scammers or Con Artists
The unfortunate reality is that not every home business opp you see out there is legitimate. There are too many horror stories of decent yet naive folks getting bilked of all the earnings they had saved to launch their new home business. You need to be very skeptical of every pitch you hear, and not make any impulsive decisions.
8) Lack of Support
Many new home business owners can’t make it all alone. Even though a home biz opportunity might present real ways to generate good income, it could become all too easy for the inexperienced newcomer to “get stuck.” Look for opportunities that have some form of support system in place, such as an easily accessible online community of like-minded souls.
9) Low Average Earnings
Some home businesses make big claims but deliver only for a handful of participants.
Avoid any business opportunity designed to let only a small “elite” group reap all the profits, while the average home business owner struggles just to survive and is too often left out in the cold.
10) A Dislike for Selling
Some home businesses force you to constantly sell yourself and your services--in person, on the phone, and through email. It’s common knowledge that the most successful salespeople have truly “thick skin.” If you are emotionally incapable of facing constant rejection on a daily basis, you might want to find a less stressful home business.
These are 10 of the most common obstacles facing the typical home business. Study the list and make sure you don’t fall into the same situations. Remember to always make an informed decision and only stick with the most legitimate and reputable home business opportunities. Good luck!
