Sell Your Own Ideas or Expertise

You can also make money online by selling the accumulated knowledge that’s in your head right now. Called “information marketing,” or “infoproduct selling,” this market capitalizes on the expertise you have built up over your lifetime through hobbies, schooling, training, or work.

Here, information in the form of a digitized electronic book, or “ebook,” is the principal item for sale. Ebooks are comprised of normal text just like regular books, but they are downloaded and read entirely on the computer.

Information marketing offers a huge income potential, because you get the benefits of an almost totally passive income system combined with the ability to set up your own affiliate market.

Ebooks are actually the perfect product from a seller’s perspective...they take up no inventory space, have no shelf life, no shipping costs, and never run out of stock. You typically won’t even have to worry about the electronic delivery of your ebooks, or returns for that matter, as you can automate the process. The whole system becomes a passive income stream, aside from replying to the occasional customer email.

You may be wondering just exactly what kind of information is used in the making of an ebook. If you have a passion, an interest, or a hobby, you can put any of these to work for you.

For example, one ebook marketer took his love for motorcycles and wrote an online manual teaching others how to ride motorcycles. Other marketers have created ebooks about computer game tips, how to catch more fish, playing jazz piano, giving great wedding speeches, and countless other topics.

Whatever your interest may be, you can market it, as long as there is at least some demand for it out there somewhere.

Finding Your Niche

Determining a profitable topic for your information product is referred to as “finding a niche,” or “niche marketing.”  You can use a variety of Internet marketing tools and techniques to determine topics that Internet searchers are actively looking for, yet are experiencing a short supply of good quality websites.

“If you find and fulfill a specialized need that is going unmet, and be the first fish in the pond--you stand to make a lot of money,” says Peter Naismith, a business analyst. When you find a good niche that you have genuine interest or expertise in, you can quickly establish yourself as an authority on that topic. As one of the first to set up shop and market to that niche, you will see sales of your information product take off quickly.

“In a web-based business there is a large first mover advantage,” says David Kisch, a business school professor. “A business has a sustained advantage over competitors if they can get there first, be large, grab a lot of ‘virtual’ real estate online.”
