Niches To Be Wary Of
I do have some words of advice about three particular topics to watch out for when searching for a niche.
1) One topic beginning Internet marketers invariably seem to come up with as their most lucrative niche idea seems to be teaching people finance, or how to make money (even how to make money online).
A good definition of a niche is a topic with medium demand but low supply. “Making money” is an extremely competitive market that can hardly be called a niche. In general, you don’t want to compete with many existing businesses that have already secured a large share of the market.
Unless you are already a financial expert or have experience making money for others, don’t try to teach something you don’t know how to do. And even if you are a financial expert in the offline world, you will be going head-to-head with some of the most experienced and skilled marketing experts on the Internet.
You may see no results, get frustrated, and simply quit. As a beginner to the Internet marketing game, I suggest you find a less competitive topic that you love and are an expert in. You can always come back and try your hand at teaching people how to make money after you yourself are earning a good income online.
2) Online gambling is another topic that seems to be chosen as a promising "niche" fairly often by hopeful beginners. But like the first market, this is a very heavily contested space. Online casinos routinely spend tens of thousands of dollars to market just a single site without even batting an eye.
And since there are new legal ramifications in the United States resulting from recent laws passed against online gambling, it’s also entirely possible to get on the wrong side of “the Feds” if you live in the U.S.
3) Finally, there is no dispute that adult sites are a huge market that drives an incredible amount of revenue. But for moral reasons, I personally can't recommend this market to you. If you do decide to look for your niche here, be warned that you may gain quite a seedy reputation among your circle if they find out what kind of website you are operating.
Legal Warnings
No matter what they’re told, some people just don’t seem to understand the simple fact that it’s illegal to copy articles from copyrighted sources, such as websites and ebooks, without permission.
Although it may seem like simple common sense, it bears repeating. Do not copy and use copyrighted content for your own website or information products.
It's amazing why people think they can get away with doing so without repercussions. In the digital world, it’s extremely easy to find out if content on a website or ebook has been plagiarized from another source.
The Internet makes information publishers highly visible, and the Internet marketing community in particular is actually fairly close-knit. People will ferret out offenders, and the original author can easily take legal action.
Search engines such as Google will also penalize offenders by delisting their sites, and web hosting companies will most likely take down such sites altogether. Copyright violators jeopardize their entire future career as Internet marketers once they are identified as content thieves. Basically, they join the ranks of scam artists. Many people have ruined their business reputations and been prosecuted by the law by taking this ill-advised course of action.
If you ever become tempted to steal content while on your e-business journey, just don’t do it. Take the safe and upright course by creating your own content.
