These days, many parents are finding that the monetary demands of raising young children requires that both parents work. But instead of finding a traditional job, many mothers are deciding that working at home is the best solution is to earn money while still being able to spend quality time with their children.
But how can you balance the requirements of working at home with your responsibilities as a mother of small children?
First of all, it's vitally important that you create a schedule for each day and stick with it in order to maximize the limited amount of time you have for your work and your children.
You may not be able to give constant full attention to your children, but try to set aside blocks of time exclusively for them. Knowing that they have certain periods of time throughout the day where you give them your full attention will assure your children of your love and interest and make them far less likely to disturb you when you are working.
During these “time outs,” try to get out of the house altogether possible, if only for a simple walk around the neighborhood or a drive to the mall. It will be good for you to get out of the house and away from work and your children will be far less likely to be antsy throughout the day.
Don't forget to attend to your own needs. Whether chatting with a neighbor or calling your husband or friend on the phone, you should try to get at least some form of adult interaction throughout the day.
You don't have to do everything yourself. Think about hiring a local high school or college student to help to help with childcare, homework, or housework, or just share the load with your husband if he is understanding enough to realize how hard it can be to work at home and take care of children at the same time.
It’s definitely not easy to work at home when you have small children. But you can do it if you are organized and determined. And the benefits are comparable when compared to leaving your children in daycare or with a nanny. You will get to enjoy many special moments with your children that many other parents miss completely and your children will feel secure in knowing that there is always a parent at home for them.
