More and more people are achieving their dreams of quitting their day job to start a home business. A home business provides many significant benefits for the family. You can conveniently work at home while your kids are attending school yet still be there for them the moment they return home.
But launching a new home business isn't always easy or problem-free. If you don't want to encounter misunderstandings arising from differing expectations between you and your family and friends, you need to be able to put up certain boundaries regarding your home business.
One main form of conflict that occurs while working at home are constant interruptions from your children, or sometimes from friends who think you relax at home all day since you don't have a “real job.” If you don’t set the proper boundaries for dealing with these interruptions, your work, and perhaps your relationships, will suffer.
It's vitally important that you let your friends and neighbors know that you have certain working hours during the day, and that your home business is vital to your family's overall income. Let them know that you can be reached only at certain times that you specify.
You also need to explain to your children that although you may be home, you're not always available for them. This can be somewhat distressing to your children if they are younger, so lay out some clear, easily understandable guidelines for them. Inform them of your specific work hours by posting up a schedule on the refrigerator, and give them a healthy alternative activity for them to do while you're occupied.
Also set up a business phone line and make sure your kids do not ever answer it. This way you can maintain your professional image, as well as avoid incidents where your children “forget” to give you a message they had been told to give you.
If you have typical children, they will “borrow” your office supplies and promptly lose them throughout the house. As an alternative, set up their own personal office supplies area somewhere else in the house, and don’t let them touch your own work supplies. Otherwise you may find yourself not having necessary equipment on hand when you most need it.
Problems arising from working at home can be effectively dealt with if you establish clear, consistent boundaries from the beginning. Managing the expectations of your family, friends and neighbors can greatly increase your productivity while reducing the potential for conflict.
