Interior Decorating Success Story

Garba

After graduating from high school, I worked as a secretary for a few years. I felt I could be doing so much more with my life, but when I got married and had children, I didn't have too many options. However, when my children began going to school during the day, I realized I wanted some kind of change, so I began looking for a work-at-home opportunity.

I've always loved art since I was a child, and so I began researching some home business jobs in the art and design field. I soon found the perfect home-based business for me--interior decorating. I knew in my heart that I had talent in this field.

But it was extremely hard to find clients at the beginning. My first job as an interior decorator was a friend of a friend, more of a charity case I suspect! But after that slow start, through good word-of-mouth I began getting jobs! Now I'm actually quite busy, because if you have a good reputation, word-of-mouth really brings you a lot of business without a lot of effort.

After a year I was making decent money and could work around my children's schedule, working primarily while they were at school. I could attend my son's sports games, and we could all spend time together as a family after school, which is precious to me.

On the job, I'm very adamant about treating my customers well... I always make their interests my top concern. Good service is so important, and it leaves a lasting feeling when, as a customer, your needs are properly attended to.

But to meet the needs of my clients, I feel I truly have to know their needs--this means I really, really try to listen to them. I actually interview potential clients before taking on their jobs. Most customers are usually excited by the latest fancy designs and bright colors, but it's really hard for them to know the subtle differences between different design choices.

I listen to what they say, but it's really up to me in the end to determine if what they're asking for really works overall. After all, they are hiring me for my expertise. Of course I don't dictate to them what they need, they tell me the general idea, but I want to emphasize that we make choices together.

Having kids of my own is actually a benefit in many cases, as I can understand the requirements of parents by designing an interior around family needs, for example, by choosing furniture with stain-resistant fabric that can resist the abuse of "energetic" children.

Overall, I feel that changes in a home's interior can have a great impact on one's state of mind and being. I don't want to sound overly spiritual, but I truly believe that a homeowner can transform the place they live into a sanctuary where they can find peace and restoration. I honestly think it can improve quality of life.

My advice to anyone who wants to become an interior decorator is to always remain curious and always strive to expand your creativity. Try to always have a professional attitude, but don't be afraid to laugh with your clients. And don't be afraid of challenge--there have actually been many ups-and-downs in my business and I've even thought of quitting at times. Balancing work and family can be draining.

But ultimately I found I love having my own home business, because I am so fulfilled.
