Landscaping Success Story

Ruben

I moved to Los Angeles from San Diego in 2001 and began working as a landscaper for a small local landscaping company, where I eventually worked for 3 years. Eventually my boss wanted to focus on other business activities so he began referring customers directly to me as an independent contactor.

I soon started getting a lot of phone calls for my services. It got to a point where I decided to formally start my own landscaping company, working out of my home.

I don't have a lot of formal education so in my free time I began taking classes at my community college where they offered courses on plant diseases and landscaping principles. My boss gave me one of his old pickup trucks, and I bought a new lawn mower and other equipment by using up most of my savings.

I had established relationships with a lot of customers who liked my work, and they kept referring more business to me. Now I have a regular list of customers, including some commercial clients, which is great. I had started out doing mainly lawn maintenance, but now I'm able to offer other services such as installation.

It's been a couple years now, and I have more business than I need. Overall I'm very happy with what I'm doing and I'm grateful to my former boss for being supportive. I like what I'm doing and it's great being able to call the shots and not having to work in a corporate environment where I have to stay indoors all day.

I've always enjoyed working outdoors and I like having the freedom to make the best choices on the job as I see fit. I'm proud to be able to say I own my own business and I enjoy working from home so I can spend more time with my wife.
